Learning Profile

The themes of the things that we learned in the class were common to the effect that they taught us how to be better students in a whole meaning that they taught you what to do and what not to do on a majority of different levels. The things we learned in this class from the text were things that you can apply to everyday life and take with you throughout your life to not only better yourself but also to better others around you that have not yet learned some of the traits and characteristics that you have learned throught the completion of this course. For example one of the texts that we read in this class was the exerpt called shame by dick gregory. In this text their message the message to me was that no matter what you have or what you dont have be proud of it and cherish it because there is always someone who is less fortunate than you are and does not hav nearly as much as you do and that person is learning to get through life just fine with out the luxuries that you have even if that luxury is a simple shirt on your back and ckothes in your clloset there is someone els out there eho does not have but one shirt that they use every day. So in my mind the moral was be thankful.
As a learner i feel that when it comes to having to put things on paper and working by myself I am very efficient. AS a youngster i was taught how to express myself on paper and i was always pushed to read many things and then aftrewards to write on it and express my opinions about the subject. In a way this prepared me fro writing papers on many levels. In fact in eight grade I was so efficient at writing and expressing myself on paper that my teacher believed my mother was writing my assignments and had me write an assignment in class to prove that i was in fact writing my own work. So when it comes to my strong point, I am very good at expressing what i feel and writing to persuade you to ffeel the exact way i feel and if i do not persuade you, you at least feel where i am coming from. this has always been a great hobby of mine in fact i write poems for fun and to realease stress. When I am going through something I write to let go of what I am feeling and to just release whatever is stressing me out. so to me as a learner I feel that my string point is writing, problem solving, and working by myself which i love to do because I have to depend on me.
As a learner in my opinion I have few weak points because i catch on very quickly and I have the ability to get things done very quickly. Although all of this is true there is one thing that bothers me that I hope to improve upon and that is the ability to work in a group and actually lead the group without going off on my own an doing my own thing and just incorporating it into what the group is doing in the end. I have a problem ith working with a group. This is mainly because i like things to go like i plan them I really hate the idea of having to depend on someone else to get things done so it looks good. I would much rather do all the work even if it is a lot just because I know that it will a ll get done and if I miss something I know who to blame ME and not anyon else. As a learner I would very much like to learn how to improve my group working skills because in some instances you cannot do everything for yourself and you need otheres to help you accomplish certain goals that you set. So in Conclusion I feelk that as a learner the main thing I am weakest in is the ability to work well with others without withdrawing from the group and going off and doing my own thing.
The main thing that i learned in this course was how to navigate my way throught the Butler website and how to do a plethora of different things wtithin the butler database. I hink the main thing that I learned that i will be carrying woth me from this course woulde be how to use the elibrary. Mainly this is because I am a student athlete so my schedule does not allow me much free time during the day to get to the library and actually do research to make significant progress in whatever I am doing ecspecially during season. So the elibrary is a perfect compiment to that. because i can go on here whenever and do research that otherwise i would be incapable of getting around to do because of my busy schedule. So the elibrary really helps me with my time managemnt issues as well so that I can keep a certain order to the things that I do froma day to day basis.In conclusion the main thing that i will take away from this class and probably on to my four year instituion would be the ability to navigate my way through a schools website and learning the ins and outs of that website so that I would be more efficient in succeeding with my academics.
The assignments used in this course were very relevent seeing as this course is a basically a student orientation course that seeks to help freshmen student gain a beeter understanding of how college works and hellp them get on their feet.
As alearner I feel that this course wa very relevent and work relevantly good althougth it is the middle of the year when this course starts so the things taught can only be puto use during the second semster that is the only drawback other than that this course is very good for first year students.
To survive and flourush in this cousre it is best that the student learns to do their work and just take each day one a time doing the work the day it is given and not procrastinating.
As an after ffect after taking this class I will be more efficient with my scooling and with everyday life learning to apply what i know to what I am doing on a regular consistent basis

Time Management

Time management is probably one of the bigges if not the biggest things that a new college student has to learn to do. Everyone has their share of mess ups when it come to managing time well and they did not quite cut it. I have done many irresponsible time management screw ups, but i also have accomplished many things when it comes to time management as well. One specific tim was my senior year in high school. The day of my state track meet which was one of the biggest track meets of my high school career was also the day of the senior prom which everyone knows at that time is the biggest thing happening in your life. As if that wasn't enough pressure i also had a Advance Placement test to study for. Luckily this was one of the few times in my High school life that i actually used time management wisely and had good time management. I studied all day and even at the track meet. When it was allmost time for my race i warmed up and ran and i even won. I studied on the way home and in between getting ready for prom, which proved to be just like i though it was going to be which was absolutely with out the shadow of a doubt amazing. When it came time to take my advance placement exam i did well because I had used good time management which made me feel good. Time Management is all about prioritizing and some time sacrificing, if you proioritize and when it comes to sacrifice ou sacrifice the right thing you should make some good desiscions in the field of time management.

Community Service

In the city that i come from an was raised in community service projects are widely appreciated yet are rarely done. If i had a chance to do something to help the community there is nothing i would do more than raising money for neighborhoods like the one i grew up in to better there recreational facilities. Where i grew up crime rips through the streets like Michael Jackson ripping of one his shirts, althought this may sound funny crime is at an all time high with washington dc having one the highest murder rates in the whole country. How does this tie in with community service you ask? Well actually i am glad that you ask. If thewre where a better reacreational core, a better series of rec centers fot the young youth there would be a efficient way to keep many youngsters off of the street. In the neighborhood i grew up there is a recreational facility called the benning park rec center. Yes this center is efficient in keeping some children off the street but with some much needed upgradeit would boost the efficiency of this rec center 100 percent. If i could start a community service project this is what it would be first i would start off by raising money through coat drives and canned food drives which are very popular in inner city communities. Second I would ask the churches in the neighborhood to hold a series of cookouts and concerts where we would make money charging the community to enter. In a sense the community would be paying to rebuild the rec center themselves without even knowing it. This is the community service pproject I would do because here is nothing more that my community needs more than to keep young ones off the street.

Butler Resources/Online Databases

Butler Resources and Online databases are a series of structured tools that can gretly help any student succeed while attending this instituion. This series of networks contains many different facets ranging from an extensive online library to an opposing viewpoints research database. Ultimately anything that a student can fathom doing on this intertwining network of higher education he/she can achieve with the right amount of no how. Butler has managed to keep this series of networks extremely easy to navigate through. If you start out trying to find a certain book in the elibrary it is not hard to then switch over an get to reading the opposing viewpoints databases. In the elibrary things are run much like a regular library. the only downsiide in my opinion is the overwhelming reality meaning that if a a book is checked out you cannot look at it until it is returned just like a real library. I think that is really cool yet on the other side it would be kind of effecient if you could view books at the same time some one else is viewing it. on the other hand Butler's elibrary is extensive and it has many books. The Opposing iewpoints databases is another really cool feature that the butler website has to offer. Say you are doing a research paper an you have to look at different sides of the argument the opposing viewpoints database is a perfect place to do so. YOu just figure out which argument you want to research and get all the information you could ever possibly need to complete your research!

Academic Plan

Academic Plan. My academic plan is very large and long. First I planned on attending Butler Community College on a track and field scholarship which i have accomplished. I plan on succeeding in completing my two years at Butler in which I will major in advertising and marketing. Upon graduating from Butler I plan on continuing my education at a four year institution where I will continue my major in advertising and I will continue running track and field. The instituion that I will most likely continue my higher education would be North Carolina A&T University. There I will continue my education on pace to graduate in four years and pursue a professional career in track and field. This is not where it ends nor is it my only option. Ultimately i Know that track and field is a very competitive sport and is all the more competititve on a professional level. In the event that I do not reach the extent of my track career I plan to enroll in the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles California. At FIDM i plan on attainin my degree in Fashion design with an emphasis on shoe design. It is the industry of shoes and fashion that has my energy and heart and this is my academic plan.

Academic Honesty

Academic Honesty. Academic Honesty is a very serious and very potent subject. Most academic honesty situations have to do with plaigirism. Plaigirism is the act of stealing ideas or writings of another an using them as ones own. "Plagiarism is mainly a lazy way of doing research. When you plagiarize you just take other peoples ideas and you claim them as your own. You don not have to do research or form your own ideas or opinions about a subject you just have to copy and paste an then you are done", these are they thoughts of kidshealth.org. Some of the reasons students resort to academic dishonesty is because of laziness or because they procrastinate and put off an assignment to the last minute. Procrastination is a big reason behind plagiarism and can lead to a lot of poor choices. cin order to know what Academic honesty is you must know what academic dishonesty is. Academic Dishonesty is engaging in behavior that can lead to subjecting you to trouble like plagiarism for example. Now that you know what academic dishonesty is it is time to find out what academic honesty is. Its wuite simple academic honesty is doing things that are honest and earnigng the grades you earn honestly whithout any side cheating or anything of the sort.

CoPiNg WiTh ChAnGe

Change has been a huge part of my life in the past year particularly because I have had to undergo many changes. One in particular deals with the losss of my grandmother my first semester here at Butler Community College. This was a big change for me, because I was used to having her around ecspecially when something was wrong and I needed spmeone to talk to. In order to get over this I had to find a way to express my feelings to friends an family . Another change that I had to go through was going from the city of Washington D.C. which is a pretty big city, and coming to the small rural town of El, Dorado Kansas where there is pretty much nothing going on ever! It was quite an adjustment but as anyone I'm an learning to cope with change which for me in that situation is not so easy. The change is very eye opening and it has opened my nose to many new things in a sense. For the first time I can focus more on school than having to worry about many things outside of school that could potentially get me into trouble. This is mainly because there is not that much to do in this small rural town that could get into much of anything. It is quite an adjustment because back home although I am in a big town things are a lot closer together an I could walk just about anywhere and the pllaces I cant walk there is public transportation. This is much different here where things are a lot more spacious and there is no public transportation what so ever. It is tsking some getting used to but in a way I am learning to appreciate the quietness.
